Drilling through a stone wall
I am trying to put some blinds up and need to drill into a thick stone wall. My current drill ain’t hacking it.

Can anyone tell me what I need to get the job done? I was looking to a Bosch hammer drill for about £70 on eBay, coupled with a silicone carbide masonary bit

Thanks cuntos

Try some "Drill All" drill bits, go through anything.

Re: Drilling through a stone wall
Bosch SDS power drill.

Do not spend less than a ton.

Buy decent SDS drill bits.

Start small. Eg for a 7 mm hole, start with a 4 mm bit, vacuum out the dust from the hole (very important) and then go up to 5 mm, vacuum, 6 mm bit, etc.

Try to do it cheap and you will be like my neighbour who had to ask me to come round to his house and sort out his hole drilling for him. Sorry no link to his Mrs.

Re: Drilling through a stone wall
By the way that advice is for a SOLID concrete wall. When you say stone that could mean a few different things.

If it's flinty / pebbly, good luck with that, if the drill bit hits an extra hard stone it can send it off true.

Be careful with SDS hammer drills, if you don't use it properly you can seriously fuck your wrist up, also ear plugs are a good idea and some kind of eye protection if parts of wall explode in your face. Elf and safety and all that shit.

That shouldn't happen if you start with a small drill bit first though.

Sorry forgot to mention most important thing.

"SDS plus" type hammer drill and bits are your friend for drilling holes in fucking hard material.

Probably best to hire the equipment or just pay someone to come and do it as a one off?

Unless you think you'll need the drill several times in the future, of course.

I bet there's probably some good DIY/building forums where you'd get a load of good advice too.

It’s also the drill bit as well bruuno, I’ve got stone walls and it’s a nightmare, go for a strong titanium or carbide material.
Thank me later

Trying to put some blinds up.

Why don't you just get a blind man to put them up?

I got a Makita one for about 110. It's fucking ace.

My life as a DIY hubby charged with drilling holes in walls for curtain rails etc was revolutionised when I discovered the proper use of a vacuum cleaner.

So what I want to know is why my Makita, which I also happen to think the world of, does not come with a mini vacuum cleaner built-in.

I mean, COME ON!

My BinL does Diamond drilling... had a family BBQ a few weeks back so got him to bring his machine to drill a few holes out for us whilst I was sticking some meat on the coals... couple of holes I needed on the concrete panels on the garage I blunted two drill heads.... he went through in about 30 seconds

Would an impact drill be any good?

Cheers lads I think it’s worth buying one as I’m bound to need to drill more holes over the years.

Leroys as a second hime it doesn’t need to be big :-)
